Graphene: The Game Changer

PROTECTION FROM WATERSPOTS: Nano Graphene reduces stubborn water stains. Stubborn sediment will be less likely to bind and damage the surface.

PROTECTION AGAINST CORROSION: rGO - reduced graphene oxides have strong anti-corrosion properties.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE: Compatibility of rGO and polymer matrices allows us to offer you a revolutionary product based on PDMS supplemented with rGO, with amazing resistance to aggressive chemicals.

FLEXIBLE AFTER CURING: Nano Graphene Coat used as a protective surface coating is characterized by increased tensile strength, durability and flexibility.

SUPER HYDROPHOBIC: Thanks to the low surface friction and the large contact angle of 110-120 ° water drops, the graphene coating is resistant to minor scratches and holograms, and at the same time the sensational hydrophobic effect improves the self-cleaning properties.

What is Nano Graphene Coating

With Graphene Coatings gaining traction, recognition and popularity, we need to properly educate our clients be it installers or vehicle owners.

I think it is only right we clear the air once and for all. Many have been misinformed or misunderstood how it works or what Artdeshine are. The common misconception is we are installing a one atom thick layer of pure graphene on the surface. That also translates to the saying "pure graphene is too expensive and not realistic to cover the whole vehicle". That is not how it works or how it should work. All our marketing materials tell the truth - reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) is dispersed in a polymer (it can be PDMS, Polysiloxane, Silane, etc. ) or generally what we call Ceramic, quartz, glass and all that. Almost all coatings are actually varieties of silicone polymers which is what they should really be called. Names like Ceramic, Glass, Quartz, SiO2 are just names. In the case of Artdeshine and SPS Graphene Coatings, PDMS is the primary type of polymer used.

The rGO is utilised for its anti corrosion properties (reducing etching, spotting, staining) and for reinforcing the polymeric structure or matrixes, resulting a stronger and tougher coating. And because the weight of rGO is so light in comparison to volume, the ratio or percentage of rGO content in a coating may seem miniscule when compared using weight but is more than sufficient to perform it's intended purposes. So, once again, the coating is not a one atom thick layer of graphene, it is rGO in a polymer coating.

The polymer used in Artdeshine's product, PDMS has very low thermal conductivity, absorbing less heat when exposed. And if heat has been absorbed, the better dissipation and thermal conductivity ability of reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) will help to negate. What we do not want is all that heat absorbed to be trapped. To say it simply, this is a case of using rGO to reduce the insulation (keeping heat) properties of PDMS.

Artdeshine has never touted using flames in any of our tests or marketing materials. This serves no purpose to demonstrate any capability of our coatings. We are not making fire-proof/retardant materials. And again, we are not touting thermal insulation as a beneficial property, we are trying to negate insulation.

Water repellent capabilities do not come from the use of rGO and can be seen in our marketing materials and information. A very high polymer (PDMS) content is used to achieve the better water-repellent effects. The polymer has been functionalized to provide much better water repellent capabilities.

The water-repellent properties will not be affected by the use of rGO. Our rGO is not functionalized to do that. rGO with it's much smaller particle size will help with better dispersion in a silicone polymer coating by spreading out the rGO to form a more uniformed stronger composite that is able to resist corrosion throughout.

A suitable metaphor would be to compare sugar that is not dissolved vs fully dissolved sugar in tea. You will be able to fully enjoy the benefits of sugar if fully dissolved. But of course rGO will not dissolve in silicone polymers, thorough and even dispersion is key.

Calling our product Nano Graphene Coating is to simplify recognition and identity and not to indicate that the coating is pure Graphene. This is similar to giving naming terms like Ceramic, Glass, Quartz to the actual name Silicone Polymer Coatings.

WHAT IS THE BEST SURFACE COATING TECHNOLOGY?

Waxes, sealants, ceramic, graphene… indeed they do have quite a lot in common.

Take the best carnauba waxes for example - many master detailers would prefer that over any coatings. The wet look and gloss can be very hard to match.

Waxes have been around for many decades and will continue to stay. But nowadays the average person does not have the time and patience to maintain their vehicle every month or so.

As a result, a revolutionary solution came in the form of ceramic coating. It offered similar characteristics as that of waxes, great gloss/sleekness and on top of that it could last for longer, generally +3 years and often better protection. This opened up a whole new opportunity and had a BIG impact on the detailing industry. For those who remember, initially ceramic was touted as a marketing hype. But as we know it today, it has become very common.

However, ceramic coating also has certain limitations: they are more prone to water spots/etching and limited durability (with single layer application) to list a few. So, there was a need to evolve this technology, resolve the issues and enhance other attributes (e.g. self-healing, sleekness, chemical resistance and others). And this is the reason you will see that there are iterations in ceramic coating formulas. Make no mistake, ceramic coating is here to stay.

Artdeshine, has 2 excellent ceramic coating: the Ayicon for extreme gloss ( > 100GU on gloss meter ) and the Ceramic Metal Oxide which contains Antimony Tin Oxide (ATO) aiming to reduce harmful chemical reactions with UV.

So, now, let’s have a bit of background about Graphene. Graphene was discovered back in 2004 by André Geim et Konstantin Novoselov and they were awarded the Nobel Prize in 2010. Graphene is a one-atom-thick two-dimensional sheet of graphite. That’s it. It is the thinnest and the strongest material in the world (200 times stronger than steel), yet it is flexible, great conductor of electricity/heat and nearly transparent. So, this caused quite a lot of interest across many industries. (See About Graphene )

This caught the attention of Artdeshine (Singapore) as well and they developed the first automotive coating using reduced Graphene Oxide in the world.

What problems are the Graphene coating trying to solve?

Graphene is a very good conductor of heat and a strong material, and these characteristics complements 2 areas where traditional ceramic struggles:

1. Corrosion resistance - Graphene due to its tensile characteristics provides better resistance against chemicals and UV rays, hence better protection. With one single layer of application, you get 5 years bonding. No need to apply more than one layer.

2. Water spot reduction - Graphene being a good conductor of heat, dissipates heat faster and hence reduces the risk of watermarks.

This is why we say it is an evolution. We get the best of ceramic coating with added capabilities.

In short, our Graphene coating is the ultimate solution to prevent water spots, corrosion and offers amazing sleekness & smoothness.

Last but not least, to complement the above information, let’s hear what the experts are saying - Yvan Lacroix who has 35 years in the detailing industry. (LinkedIn: Yvan Lacroix ) & his opinion on Graphene - Obviously, neither guys in the video are affiliates of Artdeshine or ambassadors of Graphene.

I hope I have been able to shed some light on how our Nano Graphene Coating is different from the traditional coating and what problems it is trying to solve. Obviously, our research doesn’t end here - We have recently launched Nano Graphene Coating v2 and we are continuously test casing other elements.

Nevertheless, sometimes it is difficult to discuss based on theories, you got to have the experience with it. So, I invite anyone interested to our Studio @Pailles to have an idea about the look and feel of our graphene coating and why it is among the best in the industry. The purpose is to educate customers objectively and definitely not using any of the common false marketing tricks. We would love to hear about your honest opinion, so do not hesitate to inbox us for an appointment.

I would also like to add that there are a few companies who want to jump on the graphene band wagon but have poor quality products - they just added some rGO or GO in their products and sent out big claims.

Our objective is simply to inform customers about the differences and let them know that there are alternatives they can choose from. I am glad people challenge us and they do have very legitimate questions.

So, in the end, the question should rather be: WHAT IS THE BEST SURFACE COATING TECHNOLOGY FOR ME?
